Supplying open files
robstolk always prefers to receive open files.
To supply files from Adobe Indesign correctly and safely, use the option ‘package’, which creates a zipped folder containing the InDesign file, linked images and typefonts. Besides the InDesign file, we advise to supply an IDML file that also can be used to open the documents created in an older version of InDesign. Furthermore, it is highly recommended to activate this IDML option, as well as a PDF that can be used as an entry check.
Please keep file names as compact as possible and avoid punctuation marks.
As of January 2023, PostScript or Type 1 fonts are no longer supported by Adobe. We therefore advise using truetype(.ttf) or opentype fonts (.otf).
In the case of a perfect bound book, create a file made out of single pages. For this purpose, deselect the function 'facing pages' in InDesign and check if all pages have 3 mm bleed all-around. If you have any questions about this or other technicalities in your document, please feel free to contact our studio. You can call us on +31 (0)20-668 4246 or send an email to prepress@robstolk.nl.
Should you supply files different from InDesign, such as Illustrator, we advise you to provide these as zipped (packed) (see screenshot). The package can best be sent by WeTransfer: www.robstolk.wetransfer.com.
Supplying PDF-files
We recommend that you consult us in advance if you prefer to supply a PDF.
Please feel free to contact our studio for this.
Resolution image links
robstolk prefers to receive RGB images. The images linked in an InDesign document require an output resolution of 350 dpi for images positioned on 100%. For line work and vector files, we require a minimum of 1200 dpi.
Most images are recommended to be provided in 8-bits. Only in the case of gradient screens are 16 bits images preferable.
robstolk prints in a random FM screen (stochastic), by which a very refined reproduction of details can be achieved and at the same time prevents unwanted distortions such as moiré. This random screen also works very well in rasterized texts.
Please keep the names of the images compact, unique and avoid punctuation marks.
Color profiles
To achieve the highest print quality, Robstolk converts the images from RGB to CMYK according to our settings. The best results in printing come from the correct colour profile, based on the choice of paper type: coated (ISO coated) or uncoated (ISO uncoated).

Pantone colours
If the InDesign file contains Pantone (spot) colours, please check that the name of the chosen colour comes from the correct Pantone library. Do you have questions about this or need assistance?

Adobe InDesign document
A technically correct supplied document will be processed quick and without problems. Please pay extra attention to the following aspects:
- supply a file in the page format of your enquiry, in which the documents (lines, text or image) have a minimum bleed of 3 mm;
- position the image frames carefully (by coordinates) to avoid the image crossing the next page if that is not the purpose;
- remove all colors from the colour library that are not used;
- with full-colour printing, check that any spot colours are converted to 'process'; your document should only have 4 colours (CMYK);
- in case of (bound) books, supply the interior, endpapers and (binding) cover separately, to prevent an incorrect pagination;
- use the Preflight feature in InDesign to check your file on image resolutions, embedded fonts and colors before creating a package;
- if you have any questions about specific matters such as fold-outs or other technicalities, please contact us in advance – we are happy to help and advise you!
